Through the Eyes of a Child

The other day, my younger son pointed to a woman on a TV commercial and said, “Mom, that woman looks like you!” Bless his little soul, but the actress on the screen looked nothing like me. She was young, very pretty, super tall and well – all professional actressy looking. I tried to figure out what about this woman reminded him of me and then it dawned on me. Nothing – except that she was eating chocolate chip cookies with her two boys and laughing.

So even though she didn’t actually “look” like me, this is how he sees me (at least some of the time, when I’m not in my college sweats nagging about homework and bed times). Sometimes (a lot of the time, hopefully), he “sees” me like the woman in the commercial – eating sweets, enjoying her boys and loving to laugh (all true). Which is why I absolutely loved this post called, “Through My Child’s Eyes” by Bridgette White, posted on the fabulous site Scary Mommy. Here’s a passage, but in the post she reacts to finding a picture on her phone of her in her bathing suit, taken by her son:

Who took this hideous picture of me?! Self-loathing and disgust swell up and threaten to bring me to tears. Just as I am about to hit delete, my boy walks in the room. “Do you know anything about this picture?” I ask him. I turn the screen so he can see it. He smiles huge. “I took that of you in Tahoe,” he says. “You looked so beautiful laying there. I couldn’t help it, mom.”

Here’s to seeing yourself through the most important eyes – the eyes of a child.
