Mommybites Chit-Chat: Conversations with luminaries, entrepreneurs and influencers in the parenting world

Tell us a little about you (your background, your job, what makes you tick or anything else you think our Mommybites moms will find interesting).

childmind2 I am Kristin Joy Carothers. I am the mother of Amir, a soon to be 6-month-old baby boy, and a clinical psychologist. I work at the Child Mind Institute in the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center, where I work with children and families experiencing difficulties at school and home. I’m originally from Chicago, IL, and have lived in New York for the last 6 1/2 years. I am an only child and come from a big family.

What is your best piece of parenting advice?

The best piece of parenting advice I received was to listen to my gut and follow my own intuition when deciding what was best for me and my baby. There was so much pressure when he was first born about whether or not to breast feed, when to sleep train, and how to give him a consistent schedule. Once I decided that my way might not be what others did, but was what worked for me, I was able to relax and enjoy the experience.

What or who inspires you?

I am inspired by mothers everywhere who wear multiple hats and raise happy, healthy children. My inspirations include my own mother, aunts, grandmothers and First Lady Michelle Obama. They have all lived lives in which they supported their children and pursued their own dreams.

My favorite TV shows are Modern Family, House of Cards, and Homeland. I love Daniel Tiger for my baby because it’s connected to one of my favorite shows from childhood, Mr. Rogers.

What are some of your favorite parenting products?

My favorite parenting products are body and bath products by Shea Moisture and baby products by Skip Hop.
