Put safety latches on dresser drawers in the baby’s room. Babies love to open and close drawers (can be dangerous for little fingers) but more importantly, a baby can climb into a drawer and the dresser can tip over.
Don’t assume you have to baby proof everything until baby starts moving around, Girls seems to get in much less trouble than boys so I have a 2yr old girl and have not done much baby proofing. Just move objects that could fall that are within their reach, gets safety items for the stove and oven and go from there.
Close the doors to rooms you are not using, especially the bathroom.
Use the word “danger” instead of just saying “no” when your baby is reaching for potential hazards (wires, etc)
It seems to be more effective in making lil ones stop what they are doing!
ditch the coffee table and get a soft ottoman. for some reason that is always the place baby likes to climb so make it safe for him/her.
The Lil” playzone has been amazing for keeping my son entertained and safe!
Get your baby’s perspective; crawl your way around the house to ID possible safety concerns.
Make sure to cover electrical outlets and make sure there aren’t lots of things for your baby to trip over while walking!
Babies can choke on small magnets so put away fridge magnets until they are older (moving them higher doesn’t work because they can still fall on the floor)
Never wash your baby in the sink while running the dishwasher at the same time. The boiling water from the dishwasher can come up through the drain into the sink basin and your baby can get burned.
Be aware of things your baby can reach while in your arms and while sitting in the stroller. I used to just think of what was on the floor, but they can get into things higher than that!
Young toddlers can use a q-tip instead of a pointy paint brush so that you can introduce arts and crafts sooner.
I like my toilet seat lock. Not great for guests but I don’t have to worry about little hands or toys in there.
don’t go crazy baby proofing–for most areas of the house, common sense and watching your baby is more effective. it’s not worth spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for such a short period of time in your baby’s life. focus on making any cabinets with poison in them are inaccessible, doors can’t close on little fingers and windows and the front door are baby-proofed. do not lock your toilet–you’ll just make your life more difficult–just shut the bathroom door behind you
