Friendships Over Time

I went away a few weeks ago with my college roommates for our annual “girls’ weekend.” It occurred to me as I was belly laughing so hard my sides hurt, that I had known these women for over 20 years now. We have gone through many of life’s chapters together and I am the person I am today because of these women.

On the last night of our little reunion, when my heart was already heavy knowing that it may be another whole year before I see them again, I remembered a poem that my mom had sent me that put into words exactly how I was feeling:

Someday many years from now
We’ll sit beside the candles glow
Exchanging tales about our past
And laughing as the memories flow
And when that distant day arrives
I know it will be understood
That friendship is the key to live
And we were friends and it was good.
