Ironman: A Story With Every Mile

Aloha! I am writing to you from sunny Hawaii. I am here with my boys, the grandparents and the cousins to watch my husband compete in the Hawaii Ironman this Saturday.

What the heck is an Ironman? Well, it starts off with a 2.4-mile swim, next comes a 112-mile bike ride and it finishes with a full marathon (26.2 miles). It starts at 7:00 AM with a mass start of all 2,000+ athletes. You have until midnight to finish. 17 hours – not a minute more.

Why do people submit themselves to this? I’m not 100% sure, but what I do know is that everyone who races has a story. Everyone who jumps into the water at dusk and rides through the Kona lava fields in 100 degree tempatures – knowing that when they get off their bikes they have a full marathon ahead – is racing for something way bigger than themselves.

My husband races for many reasons. He races for his brother and co-workers who passed away on 9/11. He races for the My Buddy Todd Charity his family set up to honor is brother, which raises money for children and families in need. He races to remember, to feel, to grieve, to honor. Whatever drives these men and women to race, my hope is that somewhere along the 140.6 miles they will cover, they find what they’re looking for there.

Here’s to stories told through miles covered.
