Loving Loudly

I knew I liked my friend Verta the moment she sent me an email as the class mom in my son’s 4th grade class. She declared that for the school’s Halloween celebration, she planned on dressing as “The Concierge” from the book, The Elegance of the Hedgehog (totally my humor!). An immediate, easy and fun friendship of humorous email exchanges, wine drinking, the sharing of parenting advice and lots of laughs soon blossomed.

So last fall, when I saw that Verta had shaved off her hair into a chic buzz cut, I assumed it was because she wanted to rock the hipster look (which she did with an effortless cool). I recently learned from Verta’s column in this month’s New York Family magazine that I was wrong. Below is an excerpt. To read the whole article, click here.

What I did next shocked my girl (and my boy) in a profound way. On a hot Saturday in July, I chose to share my love for her in the loudest way I knew how. I know and understand that there are no silent expressions of love. I cut my hair off. I did it for my daughter, Simone. As she looked at me, eyes wide, with the hint of that smile I adore on her perfect little mouth, I said: “I want hair just like yours.” Forgetting how much I love teeny-weeny afros, I also promised to grow it out just like hers. That was a mistake. I have no patience for things like that anymore. For weeks she would proudly and loudly tell people, “My mommy cut all her hair off because she wants it to be like mine. That’s going to take her a looong time!

Here’s to finding ways to love in the loudest ways possible.
