What They Already Know

Sometimes, during this chaotic time of year, we are so busy teaching our children about holiday traditions, thankfulness, gift giving and gratitude, we forget to celebrate what they already know. I was reminded of this recently, when I was sent a beautiful video from my friend and co-founder of Stork Films, Julie Meerschwam, which she created to celebrate her son’s 4th birthday.

I joke with Julie that I have yet to make it through one of her videos without crying, as she so eloquently captures the pureness of childhood. This time, I made it less than a minute before my waterworks began – at the scene with her son’s little hand holding an acorn.

Here is Julie’s short 3 minute video, accompanied by this beautiful poem she wrote:

The Things You Know

We try to teach you so many things
We think you have to learn
And it’s true, they’re useful
Essential even

But let’s not forget to look at, and marvel at
the things you already know

You know the world is a maze, a treasure hunt, surprises hidden at your feet.

You know to see beyond what’s obvious and build worlds around it.

You know your body is a beautiful instrument, to be celebrated and enjoyed.

You know when to hide… and when to be found.

You know what the world feels like, sounds like, tastes like…

You know that when you miss a train, there will be another one. Because even though there are places to be, there’s nowhere really to get.

You know there’s only now.

We try to teach you so many things
We think you have to learn

But thank you for reminding us
of the things you already know

Here’s to all the things our children already know and all the lessons they end up teaching us.
