How to Develop Healthy Sleep Habits for Your Baby and Toddler: Bergen Live Event Re-Cap

Most mothers are faced with the high demands of taking care of young children while also being sleep deprived! Not getting enough sleep at night not only makes being a good mom more difficult, but it also can cause women to feel depressed and anxious.

Dr. Beth Bochner, PhD, LMSW facilitated a discussion at a recent Mommybites Luncheon titled: Sweet Dreams – How to Develop Healthy Sleep Habits for Your Baby and Toddler. In addition to reviewing some of the well known theories of Dr. Richard Ferber and Dr. William Sears, she shared with us some of her own strategies that she has found helpful while working with new moms in her private practice.

Dr. Bochner really highlighted the importance of a good bedtime routine. According to Dr. Bochner, being consistent and creating a calm environment before bed is crucial for the sleep training process.

Here are some tips for new moms that Dr. Bochner shared with us:

Cut yourself some slack- It’s really OK if things aren’t perfect. Just taking care of the basics is sometimes more than enough, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

Prioritize sleep- It’s so critical for your health and happiness. Really try to sleep whenever you can.

Get help- It’s impossible to do it all alone. If you can splurge on a housekeeper once in a while, then go for it. If friends or family offer to watch the baby, then take them up on it!

Help your baby develop healthy sleep habits- the earlier you do this the better.

Remember that you are not alone- All moms go through what you are going through and you WILL survive it.

Any fruits and vieeggs, turkey sandwich, peanut butter and jelly, yogurt, crackers with cheese, applesauce, dried fruit, pretzels, cut up turkey or ham, unsalted popcorn, cheerios, fruit snack as a dessert type of thing. Mine even really likes salad!! I just use some food scissors to make the lettuce like a coleslaw look, and pack their favorite dressing. Mine is a big fan of ranch. lol I feed my toddler most of these things. She just turned 2.
