The worst part about buying gear for baby is its shelf life. Within the blink of an eye, baby has grown into a toddler and grown out of his/her bouncer, swing, play yard, high chair or crib. Once the gear is outgrown, it ends up in storage and most likely is not used again. Luckily, the baby industry is constantly evolving. A trend we are seeing a lot this year is gear that grows with your child: accommodating them from infant to toddler and into school-age. This not only saves money, but space.
Here are some of our favorites for streamlining the way baby strolls, rides, feeds & sleeps:
Stroll: New parents can end up buying three strollers if they don’t do their research. This could mean a thousand dollar investment in gear you really don’t need longterm. Some stroller models on the market now can do it all: accommodate a baby from birth to age 3+, fold up for easy travel, and provide all the bells and whistles you or baby may need. Baby Jogger’s City Mini is just one example of this 3-in-one concept.
Ride: An infant car seat is outgrown in a flash, but the next stage of car seats shouldn’t have to be. Rather than purchasing a convertible car seat for your toddler and then another booster seat at age four, try a 3-in-1 seat like the Graco Nautilus: It is forward-facing, converting from a harnessed booster to a high back belt-positioning booster and finally to a backless belt-positioning booster accommodating from 20 to 100 lbs!
Feed: At six months, when baby is having solids, parents usually purchase a traditional high chair. When he/she is a toddler, toddler advances to a harnessed booster, then maybe a dining booster. Joovy has simplified the three stages of chairs with the HiLo: accommodating up to six years of age, the seat transitions from a highchair to a low chair at table level with the push of a button.
Sleep: When it comes to sleep, parents will purchase any and everything to get baby some zzz’s. Many buy a bassinet, swing, mini-crib, play yard, and a full-size crib in the first year alone! Who has the room or budget for all of these? Now we are seeing “sleep systems” like the Graco Day2Night including a bedroom bassinet, portable bassinet, play yard & changing table in one. For half the price of one short-term sleep items, you can have it all.
