Notes from “Dad Talk: Let’s Hear What’s On Their Minds” Show
0 Yesterday we had a phenomenal group of dads come onto our bi-weekly BlogTalkRadio show Mommy ‘Bites’ and talk about their parenting POV. It was funny, insightful, and just downright awesome! If you missed it (or you want to send it to a dad you know), check it out here.
Here are some of the topics we covered:
- Changes in dad’s role from our parents’ generation
- Questions dad talk about behind closed doors
- Quality time with kids and spouses
- Digital images and info about our kids online
- Sex (oh how they stumbled and got flustered!)
- The big snip- vasectomies (oh, Heather…)
- Tough stages of parenting
- Paternity leave
The AMAZING group of dads that joined us were
- Lance Somerfeld, NYC Dads Group blog founder & at-home dad of a two-year old son
- Greg Zellers of Telling Dad; husband to one, father to three, stranger to millions
- Brad Powell, Co-Founder DadLabs.com, devoted husband and father to 3
Make sure you check out their extremely helpful blogs and groups. They are GREAT resources for dads and a place for dads to go and connect with other dads who are in the same parenting boat!
Here are some of our favorite quotes from the show:
- “My father who I love dearly who I am close to now was not the engaged father that I am now. He was the financial provider for our family which enabled my mother to be home with my brother and I.”
- “There is a new level of equality both in and out of the homes.”
- “My mom was a role model in how I parent.”
- “I compare it (learning to parent) to a video game; the first time you sit down to play Super Mario Cart you are going to make mistakes. You can read instructions and mom/dad tell you how to do it right. The first time you are going to be banging your head on the wall, make mistakes, going to be out of control but you’re going to figure it out and you’re ready for the higher levels. It’s the practice of doing that taught me how to parent.”
- “Our conversations are very similar to what moms groups are discussing: potty training, sleep, share best practices/experience, eating, playgrounds; we’re talking shop about parenting.”
- “Sex is kind of like appetites and dads would like to eat 3 meals a day but moms, especially after baby, would rather not eat!”
- “I’m not sure how I feel about a mass snipping!”
- “Every single stage comes with its own set of challenges, adventures, mistakes, & rewards!”
- “When your kids are sick and have to go to the hospital, it is terrifying and it’s like nothing I’ve ever had to experience before.”
- “We’ve (the U.S.) got the paternity leave all wrong; it should be mandatory.”
- “In Sweden, the mom gets 8 months and then the dad gets 8 months. That’s what we should be moving towards.”
