If 70% of girls believe they’re not good enough and 62% feel insecure about themselves, 100% of parents need to listen to this show!

At two, she only wears dresses because she’s a princess like the ones on TV. At six, she wants the trendiest, scantily clad doll because all her friends have it. At eight, she’s begging for makeup because she wants to be pretty like the teen superstars. Your daughter has every opportunity to be independent and confident — if only you could help her tune out the rest of the world! But can you really deny your little girl dresses, cartoons, and friends until she is out of danger?

Child and adolescent psychologist Dr. Jennifer L. Hartstein has good news: you don’t have to! Her unique philosophy teaches you to curb the world’s influence on your daughter — without making her live in a bubble.

In our hour-long online radio show, Dr. Hartstein will discuss:
* Encouraging your daughter to pursue her passion with industry and intelligence
* Establishing high but realistic expectations of your daughter and her future
* Providing context for problematic influences — from the media to her peers
* Building a mutual trust that will withstand her adolescent growing pains

We’ve seen it blasted all over the news lately: Tiger Mom, Bringing Up Bebe, Italian mothers do it best and more! It seems every culture does it right and we have it all wrong. American mothers are outraged and perplexed as to why they are being targeted and what they can learn from these books and articles making national headlines.

Let’s face it, we all want to raise bright, strong, independent children. So instead of saying “we do it best” let’s discuss what we can learn that has worked and how our children can benefit from the studies of other parenting cultures around the world.

Joining Laura & Heather for our hour-long talk show are

  • Charity Matthews of Foodlets& Huffington Post Parents, an American mom currently living in Italy
  • David F. Lancy, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, Utah State University and author of The Anthropology of Childhood
  • Laura Bandak, American mom of twins living in Bahrain

As I was reading the opinion section of the New York Times in February, another column on American child-rearing practices lept from the pages. It was at the height of “Bringing Up Bebe” and we American parents were getting bashed… again. But this article was more hopeful and had a great take away on what we can do as parents of ANY nationality to help raise our children: teach self control from an early age.

“American parents can make a child’s mind strong — by enlisting the child as an ally. In any culture, the development of self-control is crucial. This ability, which depends on the prefrontal cortex, provides the basis for mental flexibility, social skills and discipline. It predicts success in education, career and marriage. Indeed, childhood self-control is twice as important as intelligence in predicting academic achievement. Conversely, poor self-control in elementary school increases the risk of adult financial difficulties, criminal behavior, single parenthood and drug dependence.” From “Building Self-Control, the American Way

Join us as we talk to the Sandra Aamodt, author of the book “Welcome to Your Child’s Brain: How the Mind Grows From Conception to College.”

Sandra, former editor in chief of Nature Neuroscience, will share with us

- Effective approaches for building self-control

- How to harness our child’s own drives for play, social interaction and other rewards

- Play that allows children to practice skills that are useful in adult life

- Ways to help children identify their emotions and think through possible consequences

*Our sponsor for this free teleclass, Lil Yogi’s NYC, was created to introduce the fundamentals of yoga to children while they are young, open-minded, and carefree. Designed to create a positive, playful and non-competitive space where children could explore their mind, body and spirit, Lil Yogi’s NYC helps children become healthier, stronger and more relaxed.

By engaging the children’s imagination as much as focusing on their physical poses, we have created a nurturing atmosphere where children have the space to learn, experiment and flourish. We host many classes for kids outside and inside! Check out our schedule for more information on our class locations by going to our website www.lilyogisnyc.com and clicking the “schedule” tab.
