This heat wave is intense \u2013 let the water babies out!\u00a0 Since it\u2019s so hot out these days, we wanted to write to you about the best sprinklers in the city. We often take children to play in the water during our speech therapy sessions because we get so much spontaneous language out of them!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23357\" alt=\"sprinklers museum natural history\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/sprinklers-museum-natural-history-281x375.jpg\" width=\"281\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Language skills you can target include commenting on the weather, labeling objects you are using such as \u201cpail\u201d and \u201cshovel\u201d, using adjectives such as \u201cwet\u201d and \u201cdry, etc. It\u2019s also a great way to work on social skills by initiating social interaction with other children playing in the sprinklers. Water play rules!\u00a0 Here are our top choices of sprinklers within this beautiful city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brooklyn Bridge Park<\/strong> \u2013 This is located on Pier 6. Kids can climb rocks, spray each other, swing on ropes, and run around on super hot days!\u00a0 There are also hidden swings and various other items \u2013 perfect for a scavenger hunt. One big plus \u2013 it\u2019s close to Smorgasburg and you can\u2019t beat the Manhattan views!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teardrop Park<\/strong> \u2013 We absolutely love this park that is off Warren Street on the West Side because it almost feels like you\u2019re in the mountains of Manhattan, with the oversized rocks and secret pathways.\u00a0 The sprinklers are in a shady area, which is great for caregivers watching their children.\u00a0 The best part of the whole experience is a steep metal slide, which kids adore.\u00a0 Great for practicing turn-taking!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Square Park<\/strong> \u2013 This park holds a warm place in our hearts since we graduated from NYU.\u00a0 Brings back lots of memories as we walk around.\u00a0 One thing that makes it stand out are the water cannons and water mill, which can\u2019t be found in any other park!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carl Shurz Park<\/strong> &#8211; This is the perfect set of sprinklers in Yorkville on the Upper East Side, since it is enclosed.\u00a0 The playground is vast and also contains a huge sandbox.\u00a0 You can even take a walk around the park next to the water \u2013 we describe it as an oasis within Manhattan!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madison Square Park<\/strong> \u2013 There were lots of concerts going on here all summer for kiddos and afterward we had a blast splashing around as the tall waterwheel turned.\u00a0 There are even alphabet and number blocks that spray the kids with water.\u00a0 And of course, you can\u2019t beat the Shake Shack lunch right after the kids let some energy out!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23354\" alt=\"sprinklers madison square\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/sprinklers-madison-square-375x281.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Central Park\u2019s Ancient Playground<\/strong> \u2013 Right on the corner of 85th Street and 5th Avenue you will find the Ancient Playground right next to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u00a0 It is almost like you are at the Pyramids of Giza!\u00a0 What we love about it is that there is an area for toddlers and an area for older children, which helps avoid any accidents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chelsea Waterside Playground<\/strong> \u2013 Here on 23rd street and the west side you have a super cool space-themed playground!\u00a0 Huge raindrops spray the children with water as they pass underneath and there is even a water wall!\u00a0 Caregivers can also get shade under the big colorful umbrellas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23355\" alt=\"sprinklers cheslea\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/sprinklers-cheslea-280x375.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruppert Park<\/strong> \u2013 We love this park located on 90th Street and 1st Avenue since it on a gorgeous tree-lined street.\u00a0 We find that it is best for toddlers since it is simply a circle of sprinklers and they can be seen from all areas of the park.\u00a0 There\u2019s also great playground sets for little ones!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23356\" alt=\"sprinklers ruppert park\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/sprinklers-ruppert-park-375x375.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthur Rose Terrace<\/strong> &#8211; This park may be our favorite out of all of them.\u00a0 It is located right next to the iconic Museum of Natural History.\u00a0 You can enter via the museum after paying or through the Teddy Roosevelt Park.\u00a0 In what other park in NYC can you see the Planetarium while you\u2019re splashing around?\u00a0 There\u2019s also lots of seating areas on the green lawn.\u00a0 We saw an awesome dog park as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagination Playground<\/strong> \u2013 Located right at Burling Slip by the old South Street Seaport, there is a playground that lets kid\u2019s imaginationa run wild!\u00a0 There are these cool blue foams building blocks that you children can use to build &#8211; what a fun seaside adventure!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Like what you read?<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/register\/\">Sign up<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">for our free newsletter so you can be informed of the latest FREE <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/events\/\">webinars &amp; teleclasses,<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">parenting articles, &amp; weekly raffles.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Debbie Shiwbalak, M.A., CCC-SLP<\/strong>, has a Baccalaureate of Arts in Speech Pathology and is a graduate of Long Island University-CW Post Campus, where she received a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology in 2001. Debbie has 13 years experience as a speech pathologist in the New York City area. She co-authored a chapter of \u201cCutting Edge Therapies for Autism\u201d and presents at parent and professional workshops all over New York City.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Alpin Rezvani, M.A., CCC-SLP<\/strong>, graduated from New York University with a Master\u2019s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA) and has New York licensure in Speech-Language Pathology. She has 7 years of experience as a speech pathologist in the New York City area and was an adjunct instructor at New York University.
