The top eight food allergens that cause about 90% of reactions are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish; reactions to allergens vary from mild symptoms of itchy mouth or throat to very severe consequences like anaphylaxis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23590\" alt=\"tealpumpkin11\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin11.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin11.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin11.jpg?resize=240,180 240w, https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin11.jpg?resize=50,38 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Aside from having a food allergy, there are countless other medically indicated reasons why children need to adhere to special diets.\u00a0 In our country, more than 3 million people (2) have celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that damages the lining of the intestine when gluten from wheat, barley or rye is consumed.\u00a0 Irritable bowel syndrome and epilepsy are two other conditions that may require special diets to mitigate symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>While some really helpful resources exist, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/celiac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Updated-Candy-List2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celiac Disease Foundation\u2019s 2015 Gluten-Free Halloween Candy List<\/a>, it can still be daunting to try to find Halloween candy that\u2019s suitable for every trick-or-treater\u2019s special diet needs.\u00a0 A quick read of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snickers.com\/Nutritional-Info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snickers<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Bar food label<\/a> reveals it contains, milk, soy, peanuts, eggs, and <i>may<\/i> contain tree nuts.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tootsie.com\/candy\/tootsie-pops\/tootsie-pops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tootsie Pops<\/a>, although gluten and peanut free, contain soy and milk, according to the label.\u00a0 Luckily, in 2014, FARE organized a campaign to raise awareness about trick-or-treaters with food allergies, which is also helpful to kids on special diets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23591\" alt=\"tealpumpkin22\" src=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin22.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin22.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin22.jpg?resize=240,180 240w, https:\/\/mommybites.com\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/tealpumpkin22.jpg?resize=50,38 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Teal Pumpkin Project\u2122 encourages households to include kids with food allergies in trick-or-treating by offering non-food treats (playing cards, stickers, bubbles, glow sticks) in place of candy.\u00a0 The mark of a food-allergy safe home offering non-food treats?\u00a0 A teal painted pumpkin on the doorstep (teal is the official color representing food allergy awareness).<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t feel up to painting your pumpkin teal, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/teal-pumpkin-project\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FARE\u2019s website<\/a> for free downloadable signs, pumpkin carving stencils, and coloring pages.\u00a0 In its first year (2014), The Teal Pumpkin Project\u2122 reached trick-or-treaters in all 50 states and seven countries!
