Pastels vs. Glitter

My daughter’s school has a very sweet ritual. Upon drop-off in the morning all students report to the auditorium where they are met by their teachers and proceed to their classrooms. This applies to all grades except for Kindergarten. The Kindergarten students wait for a 4th or 5th grade volunteer to escort them directly to their classroom.

The school year is over in a few months and this ritual is still as sweet as it was the first day of school. Every morning, I watch through the window as my daughter puts her little hand in that of a much taller, more mature looking girl and walks away. It’s sweet and heartbreaking at the same time, especially the days when she forgets to look back for a final wave. Usually when I drop her off I’m so focused on her little face or where I need to be next, that I notice little else. Yesterday was different.

As she walked away in her cute little outfit that she had picked out herself- pastel leggings, a pink sweatshirt with hearts and her new white sneakers, I noticed the other outfit. Her 5th grade buddy sparkled from head to toe. Her shoes glittered, her jeans had rhinestone-encrusted pockets and her black t-shirt had all sorts of glittery peace signs on it. My daughter’s outfit could not have looked any younger, sweeter or more innocent in comparison. I know the days of glitter and peace signs are right around the corner but for now give me pastels, hearts and the sweet innocence of Kindergarten, any day.
