Taking Great Portraits in The Big Apple

Spend a day or an hour in Central Park and just have fun. One of my favorite spots is Bow’s Bridge, which has appeared in numerous Woody Allen films and is one of the most beautiful spots in the Park.

Find an area in the shade, as sunlight or speckled lighting from the trees will create harsh lighting and the shade provides a much nicer exposure. See photos below. The archway provides great composition, but one side is sunny and one side is in the shade. Simply switching sides, provides a better exposure and everyone is happier because the sun is not in their eyes.

Bring a favorite toy. Sometimes you can just watch and let the moment happen. I love those “in between moments” when kids are not posing and are just being themselves.

I am a New York City based photographer, specializing in children and family portraits. My nephew Tyson is one of my favorite subjects. I strive to tell stories and capture honest, beautiful moments through photography. You can see samples of my work at www.leahoverstreet.com.
