Alice in Wonderland -The Player’s Theater

This past weekend we tumbled down the rabbit hole at the Player’s Theater in Greenwich Village to see the Literally Alive musical, Alice in Wonderland, by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell.

The adventure started off with a wonderful pre-show interactive workshop where we met the playwright, a star, the composer and director. They discussed the various components that go into transforming Lewis Carroll’s classic into a musical. They encouraged a great deal of participation from their young audience in a question and answer format. The children learned about various percussion instruments and saw the effects of lighting, set design and costumes.  Additionally, they created their own Mad Hatter hats with a wide variety of arts and crafts materials.

The hour-long production was a spectacle. My four year old didn’t blink once and the belly laughs and enthusiastic clapping of my 6 year old, still rings in my ears.

The cast is vibrant, talented and extremely funny. The audience was truly transported into the whimsical and wacky world of Wonderland. The live percussion trio playing 30 different instruments was an added treat. At the end, the cast happily chatted and took pictures with kids from the audience.

So don’t be late late, for an important date: the show only runs until May 20^th and you’d be mad as a hatter if you miss it! We look forward to going back in the Fall to see Cinderella.
