Playing, Dancing and Creating at NY Kids Club

This past Friday, I had the honor of bringing my younger son to attend NY Kids Club’s open house at their newest location in Tribeca. As we walked in, we were greeted by a warm, welcoming staff and I was instantly impressed with how bright and inviting the space was.

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of our lovely time, I must first start by staying how totally impressed I was by their staff the entire time I was there. They were all so well-trained, highly skilled and enthusiastic – and it was evident that they all had experience in child development. In fact, before I went, I was a bit worried as I knew that my son would be one of the oldest children there – but they all went out of their way to keep him engaged and made sure to alter all the activities so that they were age appropriate for him as well as all the many different ages in attendance.

We started our afternoon in the gym for some free play, where my son jumped, swung and balance beamed his way around this delightful facility.

We then tried out one of their art classes, which started out with some free art time –  which lead into a more structured collage activity. I loved the step-by-step process, the use of multi textures and mediums, and most importantly, that  their amazing staff were able to keep a group of 15 children engaged and happy!

Our next activity was actually something I had never seen before. It was a gym movement class, which incorporated a type of ‘kid aerobics’ into it. The teachers were in the front singing and ‘aerobicizing’, while all the kids mirrored them. My son LOVED it. They also had the children do a mini obstacle course with a focus on proper movement and techniques of such moves as a forward roll and balance beam walk.

We ended this wonderful afternoon with one of their theater classes during which the children started with voice warmups using a variety of whimsical tongue twisters (you try saying “toy boat” 5 times in a row!). The children also learned some basic dance moves and rocked it out to some music for their grand finale!

I encourage all of you to check out NY Kids Club‘s many locations across the city.
