Does a Nanny’s Age Matter?

Whether you’re hiring a full-time or part-time nanny for your kids, there’s a lot to consider. In addition to experience, childcare philosophies, personality, and availability you may even contemplate a nanny’s age and what, if any, impact it may have on your family.

What’s the average age of a nanny? Typically, nannies are women in their 20s up to their 60s. But before you start thinking in stereotypes or fall prey to nanny ageism, we’re here to remind you that the right nanny is personal for every family–meaning it depends on the person and it depends on your family. Rather than focusing on a nanny’s age, which is truly just a number, try focusing on their experience as it pertains to your specific needs.

That said, caring for kids takes a lot of energy–emotional and physical! If it’s the physical stuff that’s giving you pause for a potential nanny, this list of interview questions can help you determine if your potential nanny (whether a younger nanny or older nanny!) has what is needed to keep up with your kiddo.

  • Are you physically comfortable….
    • carrying a child in a car seat?
    • baby wearing?
    • pushing a stroller?
    • bringing a folded stroller up stairs?
    • taking walks around the block?
    • playing on the floor?
    • running after kids outside?
    • lifting a child onto a changing table?
    • standing for extended periods of time?
    • reaching for items high-up or down low?
    • caring for a sick child?

When you have a better sense of which physical responsibilities a potential nanny can or can’t do, you can make an informed decision based on the qualifications that really matter.
