Welcome to our kid-generated Smilestone blog! This blog is the brainchild of seven-year-old L, who wanted to create a place where children could share their Smilestones. A Smilestone, according to L, is when “something really important happens in your life and it makes you feel so good, you can’t stop smiling about it.” So in a time when we read about so much “bad,” this is a blog for children to celebrate and share the “good.” As L says, “I wanted to write this blog because I hope that after reading my story, maybe you’ll decide to make a difference, too. Wouldn’t it be cool if even one person who read this blog told someone else, who told someone else, and one of those people (or maybe more) decided to make a difference, too? Maybe the difference-maker will be… YOU!!!”
A Smilestone Can Happen At Any Time by HMD
Have you ever been somewhere and you see everyone paired off with someone, talking or playing together? Everyone but you and you’re wondering, “What’s wrong with me?” Well it has happened to someone I know. In this case it was recess and everyone was playing -everyone except “V”. V has a few physical disabilities and this one day she thought no one liked her because of it.
This day went like this…
I was playing with my friends like every other recess and happened to run by V when I saw her eyes all red and puffy, sitting alone. I put my body in reverse and backpedaled to sit by her. She was sitting with her elbows on her knees and her chin in her hands, so I mimicked her until I got a smile. Then I asked her what was wrong and she said that no one liked her.
I argued and told her that that wasn’t true. I told her how sweet she was and how much I loved her. Next, I invited her to come and play with me and my friends, but she declined. So I stayed and talked with her the rest of recess. She’s a great storyteller and made me laugh.
That is my SMILESTONE and it makes me smile and feel great every time I think about it. I hope V’s day got better because I know mine did.
