On Christmas Lights

    Find Family Friendly Activities

By Sarah E. Visbeek, author of In the Trenches of Mommyhood

Every year in my Trenches, we hear the same thing from our three children, “But why don’t we have Christmas lights outside like everyone else??” Now, lest you think we are the dark and dreary house on the block, we are not. We do, in fact, have a lovely wreath on our door and a spotlight highlighting said wreath. But uh, that’s it. No window candles, no bushes and trees festively adorned with sparkling lights.

You see, Hubby and I swear we are cursed. We have YET to find the perfect window candles. They either (a) don’t fit on our windowsills (b) cast a faint yellow glow instead of a bright white glow (yuck) or (c) need to be plugged in (we don’t have electrical outlets under every window). Year after year, we try. Oh, we try to find that perfect window candle!

Guess what I’m doing today? Returning yet another box of window candles. These ones FLICKERED.

And as far as outside strings of lights go? We are THAT house. The house that tries, yet always has one strand of lights that blows out. Or blinks.

I swear, our only other option is doing what these neighbors did:

    Brilliant!
