SNOWTOBER

    Find Family Friendly Activities

By Sarah E. Visbeek, author of In the Trenches of Mommyhood

So…snow before Halloween? Who woulda thunk, right?

And even worse? No power! Plus a school “snow day” in October!

As of the writing of this post, my Trenches have been without power since Saturday evening. So here are the top 10 things I’ve realized since the power went out:

    10. That no matter how much you KNOW there’s no power, you will instinctually try to turn on the lights EVERY TIME you enter a room.

    9. That having a refrigerator in the garage is a GREAT idea.

    8. That grocery shopping right before a storm is probably NOT a great idea in hindsight when your power goes out.

    7. That I’m scared to see what will be growing in my washing machine by the time the power comes back. Because OF COURSE I had a load of laundry going.

    6. That for as much as I complain about our woodstove, I am really, truly thankful for it right now. Our Trenches are toasty warm.

    5. That I totally don’t understand why some people IN OUR SAME NEIGHBORHOOD have power, but others don’t. There’s even a street in our subdivision where one side of the street has power, and the other side doesn’t! We can look out our back windows and see that our neighbors in the cul-de-sac behind us have lights. No fair.

    4. That the Pilgrims must have been drunks.

    3. That telling your children they have to go to bed as soon as it gets dark doesn’t really work. (Didn’t the Pilgrims do that?)

    2. That my children are more flexible and easygoing than I ever realized. That they really do make the best out of every situation (much more than I can say for their father or me).

    1. That I truly owe Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace, a humongous thank you.
