Why am I so dizzy during pregnancy?

    You asked and you shall now receive. It’s only fair for us to share all of this stored up knowledge about having a baby and what is going on with your body during those nine (really ten) months. We now will answer, in a very public forum, all of those burning questions about having a baby. Each Monday, we will tackle a commonly-asked-question from the point of view of an expectant parent.     Why am I so dizzy during pregnancy?

    Pregnancy brings about a whole whirlwind of adjustments – from our changing shape to the ebbs and flows of our energy and our moods.

    Dizziness while expecting is quite common for many women. Its helpful to know that during this exciting time, we can easily have bouts of low blood sugar and low iron, known as anemia. If the dizziness persists or if you feel faint, check in with your provider. Some helpful tips:

    • Stay hydrated – make sure you always have a water bottle with you to hydrate on the go. The rule of eight glasses a day still holds, and more if your are working out or during the hot summer days.
    • Stay nourished – After a night of fasting, breakfast is the most important part of the day – especially when expecting! Make sure you have a bit of protein at every meal to keep your blood sugar levels up. Also carry healthy pregnancy snacks in your bag for light bites during your travels – fruit, granola bars, raisins, etc.
    • Stay cool – dress in loose layers, so if you get a bit heated, cooling off is a cinch. Staying out of cramped spaces (like crowded elevators or busy train cars) may also be helpful, so that your body temperature stays cool and doesn’t go on the rise.
