By Sarah E. Visbeek, author of In the Trenches of Mommyhood
Unlike my hubby, who is extremely internet-leery (he’s adamantly not on Facebook and has no clue what Twitter is), I, obviously, am a bit more relaxed about the whole dubya dubya dubya.
When I first began blogging and pretty much up until recently, I only used the moniker “Sarahviz”, which is my real first name, but not my real last name. But as time went on, I became more lax. As I accepted more and more writing gigs in places other than my personal blog, my real last name began to show up online. I was fine with this.
But then, the one thing happened that (I bet) many of us fear the most – I was discovered. By my in-laws.
Apparently, they “googled” me. And then proceeded to read 4 years worth of my blog posts. And then proceeded to voice their displeasure.
Needless to say, their discovery was a bit disconcerting. But after all, I write on the INTERNET. Where anyone can read. I should have known (and been been prepared for the fact) that they could, and would, become aware of my past-time. I regret the fact that I hurt them, yes. I even more so regret the fact that I was naive to think I could pick and choose to whom I wanted to remain anonymous.
Lesson learned. The hard way.
How about you? Are you Google-able? (Do you care?) Is your real name linked to your blog?
You can find Sarah on both Facebook & Twitter. Chat her up there too!
