Hi Everyone!
It occurred to me the other week when I was attempting to balance working and being a mom that when people say “it takes a village” they probably mean not just our ‘family village’ but our ‘friend village’ too. If it were not for the support from my friends (both emotional and also hands-on help) there is no way I would be able to successfully (ok, even adequately) balance work and parenting.
Case in point, on the one day last week when I was actually feeling like I had this whole work/life balance thing down, I received a text from my friend that she had my son, and I should call her. What do you mean she had Christopher? Christopher was supposed to still be in school! I was not supposed to pick him up for another hour! Well, it turns out that I missed an important part in Christopher’s new school’s handbook that on Fridays the children have an early dismissal. OK, maybe I didn’t “miss” it. Maybe reading his new school’s handbook was one of things on my very long to-do list that I had not quite gotten to….
Needless to say, my friend quickly realized I probably did not know about the early Friday dismissal and stayed with my son until the school was able to contact me and I came to collect him (thankfully, my son actually ended up having “the best time” playing with her son until I arrived). When I tried to thank my friend for doing this for me and for having delayed her up for close to an hour (!) she held up her hand and simply said, “Sister – that’s what friends are for”.
Here’s to one of the most important villages we as moms have – the village called Sisterhood.
Best,
Heather
