Signing with Your Little One for Thanksgiving

    Find Family Friendly Activities

By Lora Heller, Baby Fingers LLC

With the holidays quickly approaching, I wanted to share some more quick tips!

~Crayola makes washable, non-toxic finger paint.  Thanksgiving is the perfect time to make hand prints with your little one as a keepsake.  You can make extras, and decorate a few as turkeys for family & friends.

~Holiday time is a good opportunity to expose your child to new food flavor and textures.  If you make your own baby food, try an ice tray filled with pureed turkey and sweet potato.  If your little one is eating finger foods, introduce shredded turkey with gravy and sweet potato strips.

~You can make your own pumpkin bread, substituting apple sauce or yogurt for oil, and using pumpkin – leaf – or turkey shaped cookie cutters for decorative slices.  Have your little one help mix and stir, or give him/her some Tupperware to play around with as you are baking.

In sign language, Thanksgiving is a “double handed” “double thank-you.” Alternatively, move a right Q-hand from the chin to the chest.

To sign turkey, hold a “Q” under or near your chin. Wiggle it a couple times as if it were a “wattle.” (And in case you were wondering, a wattle is the reddish thing that hangs off a turkey’s neck.)

In sign language, family is signed with F hands tracing the shape of a circle, as if representing a family sitting around a dinner table.

To sign cook it is sort of like flipping a hamburger patty.

To sign hot imagine biting into a piece of pizza and having to pull it away because it’s too hot.
