Dreading the Dentist

As I’ve gotten older, I have dreaded going to the dentist more and more. I’m not sure why (maybe yet another joy of turning 40 is developing sensitive teeth?). I know that I should feel very lucky to live in a country with outstanding dental care, but having said that, I would be lying if I said I did not loathe going. In fact, here are my top five “also-not-fun-things-to-do” that I would rather do than go to the dentist:

    • Fly on a Transatlantic flight with a toddler
    • Have any other doctor appointment – including OB or mammo. Heck, I’d even do those simultaneously if that meant not going to the dentist
    • Stub my toe multiple times
    • Find a cab on a rainy day in rush hour with hungry, tired children
    • Go one whole week without eating Nutella (for those of you who know about my Nutella addiction, you know that this is huge and truly captures the magnitude of my dentist aversion).

So there you have it. But please let it be known that as much as I work myself up about going to the dentist, it’s NEVER as bad as I make it out to be. In fact, my dentist is one of the nicest guys ever, and always ends my cleaning by telling me, “Your teeth are whiter than your husband’s.” Not because this is necessarily true, but because he knows it makes me feel good.

Here’s to all those amazing and kind dentists out there who have to put up with patients like me!
