Playing for the Same Team

Hi Everyone!

My husband and I had been together for over a decade when my first son was born. (We met in college. He had a Mohawk, I had big hair and a unibrow and it was love at first sight – sort of…). So when other moms talked about how having a baby made them feel even “more connected” with their hubbies I agreed – at first.  But as the novelty of having a newborn wore off and we found ourselves in the trenches of parenthood together I gotta admit, he sort of started to bug me.  Perhaps it was when I had been up all night with the baby and then next morning he woke up and cheerfully said, “I can’t believe the baby slept all through the night without waking up!”. Or perhaps it was when I had a particularly hard day and never made it out of my pajamas and my husband came home and asked, “Why I had not be able to buy any milk today.”

But once my husband started watching the baby on his own more and more, he began to realize just how hard it really is! He realized that a whole day could go by and yet nothing seemed to get done (like milk purchasing!).  Don’t get me wrong – he still bugs me from time to time (and I know I often drive him a little crazy) but now almost 20 years later (and minus our bad college hair) we’ve learned that it’s much easier when we are on the same team.

Here’s to knowing that having a baby is hard on relationships but that with a little communication, respect and humor, having children just may make us feel more connected.

Cheers!
