Part I: THE SKINNY (in other words, what’s the product being reviewed, why is it different and why should I consider buying it?)

What is a Moso Bag? The Moso Bag is a “non-toxic, eco-friendly, fragrance free, extremely effective air purifier that absorbs odors, bacteria, harmful pollutants and allergens. It also dehumidifies, which helps prevent excess moisture, mold and mildew. Made of 100% Moso bamboo charcoal, the Moso Bag is a natural alternative to standard air fresheners, many of which contain toxic and/or carcinogenic chemicals such as formaldehyde, petrochemicals and p-dichlorobenzene”.

Where did the idea for the Moso Bag come from? “While it would be kind of fun to say it came to us in a dream, or was left in a mysterious basket next to our front door, or a small voice inside us kept chanting, “bamboo charcoal” until we finally listened, that’s not quite what happened. Instead, the Moso Bag was developed deliberately and systematically, as a solution to a couple of problems. We knew there was a need for an effective and convenient air purifier for cars and we set out to develop one, not knowing much about the world of air purifiers and air fresheners. We learned a lot, very quickly—much of it having to do with the cocktail of toxic chemicals present in most air fresheners. We introduced the Moso Bag to the American market in August 2010 at the New York International Gift Fair, with considerable success. Since then, we’ve created additional products and we have helped rid the world of unpleasant odors, one bad smell at a time.”

Any other cool facts moms should know about? “We searched the U.S. and abroad, looking for healthy options. We found Moso bamboo charcoal in China, where they call it “black diamond.” This product seemed perfect: eco-friendly, sustainable, affordable, and so safe that in parts of Asia people use it not only to purify their air but for water purification and they ingest it to help detoxify the body.”

Part II: THE REVIEW* (In other words, what does an every day person NOT affiliated with the company think of the product?):

Review by Review by Jessica Murphy

My son has severe allergies and eczema so I am very careful about the types of cleaning supplies I use and the quality of air in his bedroom. We never use anything scented and air fresheners cause him all sorts of breathing and skin issues. So when I was asked to give the Moso Natural Air Purifier a try, I did some research then jumped at the chance.

A great deal of research and development went into creating these non-toxic, eco-friendly and fragrance free bags. They are filled with bamboo charcoal which naturally absorbs odors, humidity and allergens, but is safe enough to use even if you have pets. The bags come in four sizes so you can choose the appropriate size based on the problem you are trying to tackle. Since I just received mine a few weeks ago I can’t guarantee how long it will be effective, but they are supposed to last 2 years. After that the filling can be used as fertilizer in a garden or plants.

Other reviews claim the bags are amazing at ridding a room of pet and smoke odor. We don’t have either of these problems in our apartment, but after months of construction my kids’ room had a dingy, dusty smell even with an air purifier running. I put a 200g Moso Air Purifier in the room and by the next day the odor was gone and the air felt cleaner. My son’s breathing and itchiness did seem to get a bit better, but until our construction is over I think it is going to be an ongoing battle. The air is not especially humid in our apartment, but on a rainy day I could feel the difference when I went into the room. Even with the windows closed I know all sorts of pollutants get into our apartment so I am glad there is a safe, cost and space effective way to keep the air a bit cleaner.

The bags come in a variety of colors for each of the four sizes (50g, 75g – for the refrigerator, 200g and 500g sizes). They range in price from $7.95 to $22.95. They are available for purchase at mosonatural.com as well as local stores including The Container Store.
