The Advantages of Giving Your Kids Pets

If you are a parent, then you have probably wondered if you should get a pet for your child. Whether your son wants a hamster or your daughter wants a kitten, adding an animal to your family has several advantages. A family pet can help your children develop physical, cognitive and emotional skills, and the many lessons and benefits of pet ownership will stay with them throughout their lives.

    Learn the Importance of Responsibility
If you decide to get a pet for your family, then it will be an excellent opportunity for your children to learn about responsibility. No matter how large or small the animal may be, it will need food, shelter, water and love in order to thrive, and your children will learn that pets rely on their owners to meet those needs. In order for your kids to fully benefit from the experience, make sure that the tasks you give them are age-appropriate. For example, younger children can feed and groom pets, while older children can clean up after animals and take their pets for walks. By allowing them to take on these responsibilities, your children can develop nurturing instincts that they will use as they mature and grow into caring adults.

    Strengthen Motor Skills
Pets can be especially beneficial for helping younger children develop both fine and gross motor skills. When they walk an animal or play games with their pets, they will strengthen large muscle groups and improve their mobility and balance. Your kids may also develop fine motor skills that require more control by scooping food into bowls or running a brush through an animal’s fur. These tasks will help them get the muscle strength they need to grasp a pencil, use utensils at dinner or button their jackets.

    Boost the Immune System
If you have an infant or a toddler, then you may want to consider adding a dog to the family. Many doctors believe that the presence of a dog during the first few years of a child’s life will expose him to germs that will strengthen his immune system. This will make him less susceptible to infections and may allow him to quickly recover from illnesses. Studies also show that owning a dog or cat may decrease your children’s likelihood of suffering from allergies. By introducing a pet to your household, you may be able to help your children avoid runny noses and itchy eyes as they love on your animal.

    Improve Cognitive Skills
A pet can be an excellent way to boost your children’s cognitive skills. When they become interested in a certain animal, you can encourage them to do research to find out about the animal’s habitat, diet, physical traits and characteristics. They can use this information to help them understand their pet fully so that they can best meet the animal’s needs. Your kids may learn about the life cycle as they watch your animal grow into an adult, and they will begin to understand how different animals grow and change as they mature. Many children also feel more comfortable with reading around animals rather than adults and peers. By reading to their pet on a regular basis, your kids may improve their vocabulary, comprehension and fluency, which will help them to excel in school.

    Develop Self-Confidence
Pets love unconditionally, and they often help children learn about acceptance and kindness. If your child is having problems at school, she will look forward to coming home to an animal that will love and support her no matter how bad her day is. Since pets cannot talk back, children often feel more comfortable talking to animals about their problems and concerns, and this forms a bond of trust that will later help them to develop the confidence to talk to you, their teachers or their peers. Their nonjudgmental furry friends will give them the extra love and support they need to face difficult situations, and they may become less anxious and more social as they learn to talk to others about the issues that bother them. Developing one’s self-confidence is very important during childhood. If you would like further assistance with building your children’s self-esteem, consider enrolling them in dance classes at a local studio.

Before you adopt a pet as a member of your family, you should assess the needs of both the animal and your children. You should analyze your budget, living situation and schedule before you head to the animal shelter or pet store because these factors will play a large part in the type of animal you choose. You may also want to start with something small, such as a fish or a hamster, before you invest in a pet that requires more care and attention. No matter what type of animal your family decides to adopt, you will see that there are many advantages of allowing your kids to look after a pet. They will experience both short-term and long-term benefits that they will use even as they grow into adulthood.
