You know what’s just as great as having supportive, non-judgmental mom friends? Having supportive, non- judgmental mom neighbors – especially when living in a close quarters type of place like NYC. My neighbor A. (with two kids of her own) is possibly the best neighbor ever.
Why? Because I am always greeted with a smile and an “I’m a mom too so we’re in this together” nod. I can bump into her at 7 AM in my PJs, dragging my recycling down the hall; I don’t have to keep my kids quiet on the weekends (hers are up, too); I don’t have to feel badly that every single morning at 7:20 she hears me frantically rushing my boys out the door to make a 7:30 bus; I don’t have to worry about the normal loudness of raising a family because she’s raising one, too – right next door.
And as if I couldn’t love her enough, the other day I opened my door to see her sitting in our common hallway on a conference call – to which she calmly explained that she was working from home and this was “the only place she could find some quiet” – something I have done on more than one occasion!
So here’s to A. and all the great neighbors out there that make us feel like we’re part of some inclusive, supportive club.
