Another great thing about the summer: beach reads! Beach reads for me mean I have a little more time to actually finish a book. Therefore, in the summer, I like big, fat books that are not necessarily traditional “beach reads.” Don’t get me wrong. I love a good Harlan Coben, Jennifer Weiner or Elin Hilderbrand. But some of my favorite summer reads have been Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and most recently, Shantaram by Gregory Roberts. Now keep in mind, once I had kids I had to take a little involuntary break from summer reading.
A day at the beach with little ones is harder than taking a four-hour spin class in a 105 degree room. You never stop moving. Never. However, something miraculous happened when my boys got older. They, too, discovered the pleasure of a good ‘ol beach read. Imagine my surprise when one day I found myself at the beach, in a chair, reading a book and not moving. That’s right – not moving! Instead of chasing my boys all over the beach and playing life guard in the ocean, I looked over and my older son was reading the latest Rick Riordan, my younger son a Magic Tree House book and my husband was sleeping. Bliss.
Here’s to the simple pleasure of a day at the beach with a great book. Please email me some of your favorite summer reads!
