Fight Club, Vegas and Parenting

The Mommybites Team and I just got back from a “business trip” to Las Vegas for the ABC Kids Expo. You all know the famous saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” So, say for example, one was in Vegas and wore a bedazzled Green Bay Packer’s shirt and sang Journey at the Bourbon Bar. Or say this same person caused a bit of a kerfuffle at the slot machines when she insisted the machine was rigged, “’cause how could someone spend so much time and money and still not win?!” According to Vegas rules, such out-of-character incidents would not be shared outside of the sacred “walls” of Vegas.

This universal Vegas Rule always reminds me of the famous line in Fight Club (which, to be honest, was a bit too violent for my taste, but it’s Brad Pitt – enough said), which states, “The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club.” And that got me thinking about a variation on this theme…

“When you share your deepest parenting thoughts/stories/experiences/fears with me when you are at your most vulnerable, I promise not to share it with the world.” I won’t talk about it to others unless I have your permission. Whatever private parenting moments you share with me in confidence, good or bad, “stays in Vegas.”

So here’s to the first rule of Mom Club: “Share whatever’s on your mind, and I promise not to talk to others about it.”
