“Green Up” Your Small Business

Yesterday someone threw a bag of fastfood remnants out of their car window in front of my house, drive by style. As I watched it hit the pavement and burst into a ballet of bouncing wrappers, ice and unwanted tomatoes I couldn’t help but get a little steamed.

Apparently these jokers didn’t know that our landfills are filling up at an alarming rate or maybe (sadly) they just don’t care. I like to believe it is the latter, a lack of education on the part of the thrower, that motivates his actions. And that is why I write.

In the fast paced world we inhabit it is often easier to throw your garbage away without thinking where it will end up, but forward thinking businesses must take their actions into account. Today I offer three simple options to help “green up” your small business.

  1. Add sustainability to your companies core values and put together a small group of people who can brainstorm ways for your company to do more with less.
  2. Place small recycle bins in each office, cubicle and conference room. This creates a sense of awareness with your employees and it will reinforce your commitment to sustainability.
  3. Place a small composting bin outside of your break room and send out an email informing everyone where it is. Now you have ready made fertilizer for the office plants and outdoor landscaping.

I would also recommend calling your local recycling plants to see if they buy recycled materials. Many do and this could add some revenue to your bottom line while doing good at the same time.

Your small business is setting an example to your staff as well as those who frequent your business. Make the example you set a good one and the word of mouth that will come from it will be the icing on the cake of simply doing your part for our planet.
