7 Organizers Every Kid’s Room Needs

Kids have a lot of stuff, most of which gets crammed into their bedrooms. Dressers, desks, and bookshelves go a long way to organizing the basics, but most of the time they’re not enough to tidy the tiny toys, endless papers, and surplus of accessories that inevitably creep their way onto every visible surface.

When you’re designing your kid’s room or simply doing a seasonal purge, adding these organizers can help prevent the pile ups before they start or, in the very least, they’ll give coming kid messes a good hiding spot (which is still an organizing win when you’ve got kids and a busy household to keep up with).

Bookends

Chances are your child has a bookshelf in their room, but chances are also that it’s already full of their favorite bedtime books. When you’re not quite ready to make a library donation, you can place a pair of bookends on top of the bookshelf or on a nearby desk or dresser. This will give your child an extra area to keep books so they’re not stacked in odd places, which in a kid’s room translates to tiny avalanches waiting to happen.

Picture Ledge

This type of floating shelf has so much potential in a kids’ room when you hang it at a kid-friendly height. Besides displaying keepsake tchotchkes (we’ve all got ‘em!), a picture ledge can corral completed Lego creations or hold a sketchbook and art supply cup. Just remember to coach your kids on what they should use it for to prevent it from becoming another eye sore.

Toy Bin

Every kid’s room needs a place to quickly tuck the things cluttering the floor when it’s time for bed or company is coming. It can be a sturdy open basket or a traditional chest, just as long as it’s large enough to fit your kids’ favorite playthings and be sorted through easily. Like most drop spots zones, it’ll require routine maintenance, but it’s a necessary toy organizer if you want to save your sanity and see your floor.

Drawer Dividers

No matter how much effort you put into folding and sorting each week, kid’s clothes tend to get pushed around in drawers pretty quickly between all of the repeat outfit changes and growth spurts. Inserting drawer dividers helps keep the chaos in channels, especially where smaller items like socks and undies are stored.

Wall Hooks

From toy binoculars to backpacks, there’s always something laying around in a kid’s room that can be quickly hung when it’s clean up time. Installing a handful of hooks or a hook rack on an empty wall turns unused vertical space into a helpful storage spot. Remember to hang them within your child’s reach so they can easily use the hooks themselves.

Bulletin Board

Even in this digital age, we’ve all got paper problems and kid’s rooms are definitely not immune to pileups. Hang a decorative bulletin board or magnet board so photos, artwork, and paper keepsakes don’t collect dust on the dresser or desk. Kids of all ages will love being able to move their favorite things around, and parents will love not having tape stuck to the painted walls.

Underbed Bin

Toys inevitably end up underneath kids’ beds. But put a large bin or container below and you can turn it into a help storage spot–and one you can access everything without doing the commando crawl. Choose an open style or one with a lid that opens halfway so you and your kiddos can reach right in without sliding the whole thing out every time.
