No More Cupcakes & Tummy Aches is a wonderful book to help explain to a child what Celiac Disease is as well as the challenges that might accompany it. This book is well written and clearly describes the symptoms and emotions of having Celiac Disease. It also discusses the process of visiting the pediatrician and preparing your child for what might occur at the doctor’s office, such as getting your blood taken, shots, etc. As a parent, it gives me time to explain to my child what she should expect.
At the end of No More Cupcakes & Tummy Aches, Izzie’s mom buys special gluten free products online and she can eat her favorite cupcakes and sweets again. What I enjoyed most about this book was that Izzie felt special and was not singled out for her allergy. This book can also be helpful to read to a class to increase the awareness of children who are diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
Allison Topilow, MS, RD, CDN, nutrition consultant, recommends consulting with a registered dietitian specializing in Celiac Disease to help ease the transition to a gluten-free diet. There are also many organizations for additional support such as The Celiac Foundation.
With this book, you can target expanding vocabulary, answering ‘wh” questions, discussing the characters emotions, asking “wh” questions, retelling narratives and improving literacy to name a few.
