Fostering a Love of Reading

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how much my tween son loves to read, and how we now enjoy reading the same books (thank you, Katniss Everdeen). Many of you have asked me how my son’s love of reading began and evolved. To be honest, I think a lot of it is just his innate interest in books, but I also remember going to a workshop years ago on how parents can help their kids develop a love for reading from an early age.

I still find many of the tips and suggestions that I learned in this workshop helpful, which is why I am so excited to announce our new no-cost online class on this very subject: Loving Reading – How Parents Can Shape Reading Attitudes From Birth (and beyond!). I’m thrilled to be the facilitator for this class with the teachers from NYC’s new early learning center, Explore and Discover. Here is a bit more about the class, so if you’re interested, I invite you to sign up:

“All of us want our children to be avid readers, as we know that life success is connected to our ability to digest and process information, to deepen our understanding of the way the world works, and to become productive, thinking, members of society. But what does reading really offer our children, especially our infants and toddlers, and how can we motivate them from birth to set out on the reading quest over a lifetime?”

Here’s to fostering a love of reading that will last a lifetime!
