This past Mother’s Day my sons presented me with cards that they had made at school, sharing some of their favorite “mommy memories.” It occurred to me as I was reading their cards that neither boy wrote about “big” events such as holidays, birthdays or vacations. They wrote instead about our walks to the bus stop each morning, a funny joke I’d told, helping them with their homework and taking them out to dinner.
As much as I (and probably many moms) try to make the “big” moments in their lives perfect, what my sons chose to write about when remembering our times together was the joy of the everyday moments. Their happy memories are, in fact, the ordinary – not the extraordinary. You know what? They’re right. These everyday rituals are indeed special and memorable. And when my sons close their eyes and think of me, these are exactly the moments I want them to remember.
Here’s to the big moments in our families’ lives, but more importantly, here’s to the all the moments in-between.
