If you are ever interested in witnessing pure joy amongst all ages and cultures, I strongly suggest you watch people at the end of those log flume water park rides. This revelation came to me when I was at Universal Studios with my family a few weeks ago.
My sons had finally convinced me to go on a roller coaster – even though I was scared and convinced the “ride would break down with me on it.” And guess what? It did break down while I was on it, and I had to climb down via scaffolding and ladders!
So, needless to say, I passed on their pleas for me to go with them down the huge, steep, scary, wet and cold log flume ride (can’t fool me twice!). So I had some time while I was waiting for them in the “log flume plunge viewing area.”
And here is what I witnessed: time after time, boat-loads of people of all ages and all races, speaking all different languages, were screaming and high-fiving each other in absolute delight. It was like they were plunged into a pool of communal bliss that, for that brief instance, united a group of people who, only two minutes previously, had never met. Even the grumpiest of people could literally not help themselves but to laugh, whoop and holler. Which got me thinking that maybe we could all use a laugh and a good cold plunge a little more.
Here’s to a theme park ride uniting us all, even if it’s for the briefest of moments (’cause that’s a start, isn’t it?).
