Snow days tend to be relaxing, and they can also be fun! You don’t have to stay inside all day because it is snowing and cold outside. It can be especially fun to take your kids out and play in the snow. On snowy days, there are several activities that you can try. However, before starting the fun, ensure that everyone understands the winter safety rules.
Sledding
On a winter’s day, gliding through the snow on a sled can be quite thrilling. For this activity, you will need a steep hill and a toboggan. Teens can typically sled alone; however, toddlers and younger kids must always ride with a grown-up.
Skiing
Downhill skiing is an ideal winter activity for athletic families. Parents have been known to give their kids skiing lessons as early as two or three years old. However, according to experts, age five is the best age to give them lessons. At this age, they are less fearful and more coordinated. Kids should always wear a safety helmet on the slopes.
Snowboarding
Like skiing, kids often take snowboarding lessons when they are young. When renting a board, consider its overall length. If your kids will spend time snowboarding at a park, rent a board that is somewhat short. A longer board is ideal for mountain trails and freestyle boarding adventures.
Snowshoeing
If everyone enjoys hiking, take your family snowshoeing. Snowshoes and poles for kids are available at most outdoor retail stores. Depending on the height of the snow, the poles may be optional. However, if your child doesn’t have good balance, the poles can be quite helpful.
Snowman building
If you prefer a more relaxing winter activity, consider building a snowman (or woman) in your yard. Kids like building snowmen because they get to use their imaginations. To promote creativity, use several various items, such as sticks, fruits, vegetables, and clothes.
Igloo building
Kids who understand how to build snowmen typically build snow forts as they get older. For the task of building an igloo, everyone must shovel snow into the shape of a dome. Once the igloo is built, it can be used for cover during a snowball fight.
Ice fishing
If you want to involve a grandparent, ice fishing is highly recommended. Although ice fishing is a calming activity for older adults, kids may get bored as they wait for fish to bite. So, always keep your ice fishing trips short. For safety reasons, you must ensure that the ice is at least four inches thick at the fishing spot.
Each of these activities can be enjoyed on a winter day with kids. Before you try any of them, please consider every safety precaution. Most importantly, enjoy the time you have to spend with your children. Have fun, take some pictures, and make some more precious memories together.
