Children’s Birthday Parties – No Stress Needed

Last month, my seven-year-old boy turned to me and said, “Mom, I’m seven this year. I don’t need a party. I want to spend the day on rides at Coney Island.” Awesome. Done. My five-year- old – no such luck. He requested a big shebang. However, I did not have the time, money or inclination to plan a big party. In the end, I simply invited his friends to the park for a big play date and brought cupcakes.

Planning a party for your child should not invoke fear and stress, but for many parents it does just that. Where to host it? Must I invite his whole class? How much is that bouncy place?

If you’re stressing over the cost of a birthday party, remember that all your kid really wants is his friends and family together celebrating his big day. He won’t remember that $750 magician in a few years anyway.

Dear Abby so eloquently stated, “If you want your children to turn out well, spend twice as much time with them and half as much money.” I love that.
