With all the press surrounding the Steubenville case, there has been a lot of talk about kids doing the wrong thing. I would like to share an example of a kid doing the right thing.
My good friend M has an older brother who is both mentally retarded and gay. M and her brother went to the same high school, as it had an inclusive learning department for her brother. One day, when M was a freshman, a very popular senior boy and athlete approached her. He discretely handed her a folded up piece of notebook paper. “This is something your brother gave to me. I wanted to make sure this did not get into the wrong hands,” he said and walked away. When M opened up the folded piece of paper, she saw that it was a love note written to this senior boy by her brother. Imagine what would have happened had the boy shared this private note with the school?
Here’s to celebrating all the times that the children in this country do the right thing. To all the times they are brave, respectful and kind. To all the times they stand up for and to each other. All the times they don’t turn a blind eye. May we live in a society where more and more kids choose to do the right thing.
