Business Basics: Going Back to Work After Having a Baby

By Jennifer Goldberg, mom, writer & editor of The Cultured Bohemian

I believe all women are naturally adept at multi-tasking. There will be no time in a woman’s life when she needs that natural ability more than when she has a newborn. Think of all that you do on a daily basis for that newborn (not to mention for yourself, your partner and other children if you have them), and then add a job outside the home to that mix. Having a newborn and going back to work or starting your own business can be very overwhelming. Even if you are working from home, you still need to keep to a schedule because I believe that is the only way to get anything done-that, and plan, plan, plan.

If you are a working mom, you have probably planned to take maternity leave. Make the most of that leave and really bond with your baby and delegate other responsibilities. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and always accept it if it is offered. Venture out and try and meet new moms like yourself. You will be happy you made an effort finding new friendships after you have gone back to work. These new friends will already be in your life and you can concentrate on your professional job, instead of just starting the hard work of forging new friendships at that time.

Above all, during maternity leave, get some sleep! You will not be able to function during maternity leave or after if you don’t catch up on your sleep when the baby sleeps. Try and get the baby on a schedule because that may help you navigate your new work day if you know exactly when your baby naps.

Even if you plan on working from home, try and secure some kind of help because some days just don’t go as planned. Your baby could have a cold, or need to be taken to the doctor. You always should have a Plan B. You also should figure out breast-feeding and when you need to start introducing the baby to a bottle. Keep a change of clothes and a packed diaper bag in your car. You never know when you’ll need extra wipes or diapers!

A baby and a new or existing job are exciting, but stressful, life changes. With careful planning and a flexible attitude you will enjoy the ups-and-downs of both!
