Early Morning Footsteps

There was a time when my boys were young that I hated the mornings. Both boys were very early risers and it was not uncommon for our whole household to be up way before 5:00 AM. By 10:00 AM, it felt like a full day had passed. Those early morning hours were some long, lonely times.

My boys are much older now. They sleep in (sometimes longer than I do!), they go to school, play sports, have homework and lead busy lives. So busy, in fact, that the morning is often the only time of the day I get real quality time with them. While I loved the innocence of the early morning, there were many times when I dreaded hearing that first cry of the day when they were infants – or the toddler pitter-patter as they walked to my room in the wee hours, way before the sun was even thinking about rising.

Now, I look forward to their footsteps each morning when they climb into bed with me for those rare peaceful moments before the craziness of our day starts. What I dread now is the day they outgrow this and the footsteps stop coming.

Here’s to the parents of the early risers and once it’s not SO early, here’s to the footsteps never ending.
