No Need to Feel Alone

There is a line that the character Milesandre always says in Game of Thrones that goes, “The night is dark and full of terrors.” Now, I know she is talking about something downright sinister (’cause she is just plain creepy and makes me long for scenes with John Snow instead), but for some reason, whenever she says that it makes me think about how long the nights were and how terrified I felt as a new mom.

I know a lot of moms truly enjoy the night time with their babies (the stillness, the quiet, the peace), but I dreaded them. There was something about the dark – the waiting for that first cry, the feeling that I would never sleep again, the feeling that morning was so far off – that made me feel totally alone. I remember that the only thing that calmed me during those long nights was hearing a person on the street below joyfully whistling at about 4 AM every day – perhaps on their way to work, perhaps coming home. I’ll never know, but it reminded me that I was not the only person awake. I was not alone – because no matter how long the night felt, the sun would always rise the next morning.

Here’s to knowing the night may be dark, but we don’t need to feel alone.
