We recently held a highly informative, fun, and inspirational online class with expert Deanna deCampos, founder of Eastside Westside Music Together – also our generous sponsor – on how music can play an incredibly powerful role in our lives.
Deanna explained how introducing music to babies and young children can promote healthy brain development, and she provided tips on how parents can create quality early music experiences with their little one immediately, and set the stage for long-lasting benefits down the road.

Babies’ brains benefit from music lessons, even before they can walk and talk is about research that studied the differences between when parents participate with their infants in a musical setting vs. just a listening experience.
Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University is a site that provides information on brain development in infants, and what the influencers are during the early months and years of life. This is an amazing resource for parents! One of their articles, Serve and Return, discusses brain architecture and this important component of baby’s brain development.

Deanna began teaching Music Together in 1992 and founded Eastside Westside Music Together in early 1993. This spring, ESWSMT begins its 25th year bringing neighborhood families together to make music and has served nearly 50,000 Manhattan families on the UES and UWS since its inception. Deanna has performed as both actor and singer on stages throughout the country and can occasionally be spotted performing on stage with her husband, tenor saxophonist Ned Otter. In 2009, she co-founded the non-profit organization ArtStrides with three other Music Together colleagues. Deanna still loves to teach weekly and has taught Infants, Mixed-ages, Preschool, Big Kids, Intergenerational, Outreach, and Guitar for Grown-ups classes. Along with being at the helm at this center, Deanna is also the Director of Educational Services for Music Together’s international headquarters, overseeing teacher education worldwide.
