Smilestone On Art

If your child, or any child you know, would like to share his or her Smilestone, please email [email protected].

Welcome to our kid-generated Smilestone blog! This blog is the brainchild of seven-year-old L, who wanted to create a place where children could share their Smilestones. A Smilestone, according to L, is when “something really important happens in your life and it makes you feel so good, you can’t stop smiling about it.” So in a time when we read about so much “bad,” this is a blog for children to celebrate and share the “good.” As L says, “I wanted to write this blog because I hope that after reading my story, maybe you’ll decide to make a difference, too. Wouldn’t it be cool if even one person who read this blog told someone else, who told someone else, and one of those people (or maybe more) decided to make a difference, too? Maybe the difference-maker will be… YOU!!!”

Smilestone On Art by P

One thing I really like to do is art. I think it helps me express my feelings and is a fun way to use some of my free time. I think that drawing and painting is a great thing to do because when I give a painting or drawing to someone in my family or a teacher, the wide grin that crosses their face is something that I will remember forever.

Art helps me because when I draw a picture with bright, happy, colors it changes my emotions to bubbly ones. Sometimes, art can help you recognize the beauty of things. It helps me notice the detail, color, shading, etc., of many things that I may not have noticed before.

Drawing can help you meet new friends. I know that I have met A LOT of kids that I would really like to be friends with. Art is just a fun thing to do. If you don’t usually draw or paint, I think you should pick up a pencil or brush and try, because you could have a real talent. I love art, it is one of my favorite activities/talents that I have.

The toucan drawing was very challenging and fun. This picture was very bright and cheerful and I liked the feeling it gave me. The details were very hard to capture, because the bird is in a hard and interesting position. The amount of the color black used really makes the bright yellows and oranges pop. I was very dedicated to finishing this and bringing it home because I thought it would add a bright splash of color to our house.

PW is 10 years old and attends Monmouth Beach School in Monmouth Beach, NJ. However, her school was devastated by hurricane Sandy so she is currently finishing out her 5th grade year at Shore Regional High School. P has an older brother and younger sister and plays competitive Basketball, Lacrosse, Softball, tennis and Swims. She is very social and cherishes her time with friends and family.
