Celebrating Differences

I was going to tell you all about my friend and Mommybites speaker, Meg Zucker. I was going to tell you how she is a remarkable mom, an accomplished lawyer and that she also happened to be born with a rare condition whereby she only has one finger on each hand and one toe on each foot – as do her two sons. I was going to go on about how amazing Meg is and how I am a better person and mother for knowing her. But instead of only telling you, how about I show you? Check out this 3-minute video about Meg and read this clip from her blog:

The other night before bed, I asked my 10-year-old son E if he was nervous about attending a camp where the majority were strangers. I reminded him that the fact that he looked different was merely a blessing in disguise. “You won’t have to worry about what people think of you. You will attract only the most wonderful kids; they will be the ones who want to know you.” E responded, “Mom, this is not a blessing in disguise!” “It’s not?” I replied. I felt disappointment and even anxiety began to run through my body. “Nope, it’s simply a blessing. Why would I care what other people think? You don’t.”

Here’s to “celebrating a world of differences.”
