Joyful Revolution

I had the honor this past Tuesday night of attending the Joyful Revolution Gala, an event to raise money for the incredible Joyful Heart Foundation. The vision of the Joyful Heart Foundation is a world free of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. Their mission is to transform society’s response to these types of violence, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever. In the spirit of their mission and in honor of last month’s Child Abuse Prevention month, I would like to share an interview I did a few year’s ago for NY Family Magazine with Jill Starishevsky, a prosecutor of child abuse and sex crimes here in NYC.

To be honest, I was very hesitant to do an interview on such a dark and truly scary topic. But once I read the statistics, I quickly realized this was an issue that needed to be discussed. According to experts, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. A year or so after my interview was published, I was out to dinner with friends, and one of the guys we were with pulled me aside. He told me he had read my article and felt that if his mom had read the article when he was a boy, it may have helped prevent the years of sexual abuse he had endured by his paternal grandfather.

So I share the article with you today (and at the bottom is Jill’s 10 Tips To Keep Children Safe From Sexual Abuse). And for any of our readers who are victims of abuse, I share with you the words that Vice President Biden said during his speech at the Joyful Revolution Gala: “We hear you. We believe you. We stand with you.”

Here’s to a world free of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.
