Chit Chat: Bethany Braun-Silva, Senior Editor at NYMetroParents

Tell us a little about you

I am the Senior Editor at NYMetroParents and Big Apple Parent Magazine, but a career in media wasn’t always the plan. As it is for many of us, getting pregnant completely altered my career path and started me on the road to becoming a journalist. I love that my personal life informs my professional life and vice versa.

What or who inspires you?

It might sound cliché but my mother is my number one inspiration. She switched careers in her 30s and rose to the top of her field, all while raising me. She is living proof that with grit and determination, women can do it all and have it all. In many ways I’m following in her footsteps, and I couldn’t be prouder.

What is your best piece of parenting advice?

My favorite piece of parenting advice was given to me by a nurse when my first son had to spend some time in the NICU. I was scared, sad, and overwhelmed, as any parent who has had to go through that experience knows. She said, “Everything you don’t know, he will teach you.” And it’s true… he has!

What are some of your favorite parenting products?

Being a New Yorker means you need a serious stroller with a serious footmuff for those cold winters. We walk everywhere, so our 7A.M. Blanket 212 is a lifesaver. I don’t have to worry about my toddler getting cold on walks to the grocery store or to pick up his brother from school. No-spill snack holders also are a lifesaver. Anything that makes getting around town with kids easier, we love!

What is your best parenting hack?

Making cleaning up a fun game! My toddler loves to unload the dishwasher, but since he’s 2, we only let him put away the utensils. I also bought my boys the Melissa and Doug Let’s Play House! Dust! Sweep! Mop! set so they can take part in some imaginative play that helps mom and dad out, too!

What’s up next for you professionally?

Lately, I’ve been getting to interview a lot of different celebrity parents and I hope to keep that going. My favorite interview I did recently was with kids’ musician Laurie Berkner. My sons and I have seen her in concert several times and we are big fans. It was great talking to her about her songwriting process and she even performed a song live, right in my office!
