Asthma is a respiratory condition that inflames an individual’s airways, and it is very common among younger children. If your child has recently been diagnosed with this respiratory disease, then you will need to come up with a comprehensive plan to reduce their risk of an asthma attack. Here are a few tactics and strategies that you can use to keep your child healthy and comfortable in the coming years.

Track Their Triggers

When your child is exposed to asthma triggers, they could have an asthma attack. Some of the most common triggers include smoke, pollen, mold, dander, and dust mites.

If a certain allergen triggers an asthma attack, then you should write it down in a journal so that you can track the triggers and the severity of the attack they cause. This will help you work with a doctor to ensure that your child is prepared with the right medications. You should also keep track of when their asthma attacks take place and how long it takes them to recover.

Deep Clean Your Home

Cleaning every room in your home isn’t going to cure your child’s asthma, but it will improve their respiratory health. Your home could be filled with allergens and toxins that could trigger asthma attacks, which why it needs to be cleaned as often as possible.

Instead of using harsh cleaners that could potentially irritate your child’s airways, you might want to make your own cleaning products made of non-toxic ingredients like white vinegar and baking soda. Having the carpets and furniture regularly cleaned to prevent the settling of dust mites and the buildup of allergens can greatly increase the health of your child.

Have Your HVAC System Serviced

Keeping your HVAC system clean and well-maintained is going to be absolutely vital to your child’s health and comfort. At least twice a year, you should hire a local contractor who offers air conditioning repair services and general HVAC maintenance.

During those service calls, they can plug any holes in the system, sanitize the ducts, and clean the outdoor condenser. You might also want to have an HVAC contractor install a whole-house air filtration system or dehumidifier to prevent mold development or allergen buildup.

Inform Their School

After your kid is diagnosed with asthma, the doctor will most likely give you an asthma action plan. That plan should include information such as what medications they are taking and how often those medications need to be taken. Before your child goes to school, you need to make a few copies of the asthma action plan and give them to all of their teachers. You can also make copies for their coaches and any other adults who will be supervising them.

Because asthma attacks can be so severe, it’s important that the adults in charge of your child have access to all relevant information regarding their condition, triggers, and how to help during any kind of asthma attack.

An asthma diagnosis is going to change your child’s life, but you can do quite a bit to mitigate some of the side effects of this condition. Asthma is very common and in no way has to be debilitating or impede your child’s quality of life. With a little bit of foresight and some planning, you should be able to improve your child’s respiratory health and help them avoid common asthma triggers.
